HOW THIS CLASS CAME TO BE

At the end of every Dad Certified class I have taught, I ask these two questions: On a scale of 1-10, how confident are you to use these skills? What would it take to increase your confidence one point? No matter what level of confidence people rate themselves, most say that practicing the skills is the part that will increase their confidence. Yet, the problem is that the skills seem to dry up the second they are outside the context of the classroom setting. Who can you practice with that understands what you’re talking about?! Well, who better than the people who took the class with you!

That’s the idea behind Dad Certified Level II. Some people get out of the Level I class hungry for more. It’s certainly not everyone, yet the passionate few are a lively bunch ready to take on the awkward challenge of incorporating the skills for everyday use.

THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING

One dear friend in St. Louis exclaimed after a Dad Certified class, “Oh, man, you’ve ruined me! Now I am realizing how much this changes everything.” It’s not just dads we’re talking about here; the broader application of the skills applies to husbands, children, our parents, and beyond, because we’re talking about the basis of communication. What is that basis? It’s our state of being in any given moment, and what contributes to our sense of living. Feeeeeeeelings. Emotional states. Needs and the extent to which they are satisfied.

So, here’s to you, passionate warrior, who lives for unity and harmony. Here’s to you for all your efforts to make a difference in your family as well as those families you encounter professionally and personally. Here’s to you, wild soul, who believes, even in the faintest of ways, that we can all get along and get our needs met.

WHAT IT WILL LOOK LIKE

Dad Certified II is a time for you to connect with other Dad Certified Level I folks who are just as dedicated as you to dive into the rabbit hole. We’ll pair off in groups of two in order to practice these skills. We’ll use technology to record these sessions and then play them back for the class to critique. Baptism by fire, people! It was the gateway through which I destroyed all preconceived notions of my greatness while in graduate school for counseling. Until the peer review, I thought I was hot shit. After the peer review, my humbled attitude was finally able to truly listen to people’s heart song. It’s a quiet, tender tone. You gotta hunker down to hear it.

I invite you to hunker down with me and our passionate peers. We’ll support each other with grace and respect. Our developing skills will be nurtured by our curiosity for what is possible.

WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID

“You know those tense conversations where things could go either way? Words land in unintended ways, and the discomfort builds. Misunderstanding circles around, ready to sever fledgling connections. And then, someone takes a deep breath, and says a few gentle, golden words: “I hear you.” Or, “Would you be willing tell me more about that?” And in that moment, you know the odds have shifted in your favor: We can figure this out together! Those moments may seem like magic or just good luck, but it turns out they’re teachable. Joe Valley specializes in those teachable moments as a counselor. And thankfully, for those of us who work in the birth profession with parents-to-be, Joe teaches these compassionate communication skills in his visionary Empowered Papa program. In a class with Joe, you’ll laugh, you’ll learn, and you’ll be moved by the authenticity and openness he brings to this work. Through Joe’s teaching, you’ll learn to hold space for parents-to-be as they navigate the vulnerabilities of birthing a family. You’ll also learn specific techniques to foster trust and express empathy with your clients–especially with reluctant dads-to-be. Joe’s teachings will transform your professional relationships and enrich your birth career. In addition to the high-quality lessons in Joe’s classes –drawn from his training as a professional counselor and his own experience as a father– his open, inviting teaching style will encourage you along in refining your communication and relationship skills. I highly recommend Joe Valley as a teacher and as a human, and I’m grateful for his dedication to helping dads-to-be get connected to the birth experience.”
